IMPACT OF A PROJECTILE IN A METAL BOX

Initial projectile and metal box

This demonstration calculation shows the impact of a simple rectangular projectile in a metal box. The projectile is made of isotropic linear elastic material.

The box contains metal which is modeled with Von-Mises elasto plasticity. At the border of the metal box displacements are suppressed. Inertia effects, mass, are taken into account in the analysis.

Initially the projectile is given a downward velocity of 100 m/s. In the pictures below we show the initial box and projectile, and then for some points in time a plot of the velocity and plastic deformations. The projectile significantly slows down from 100 m/s to 40 m/s in only a time span of 0.006s.

The metal under the projectile is pressed downwards, but flows upwards at both sides of the projectile.
